Player's viewpoint - Rashaad Singleton

The Sendai center reflected on his team's triumph on Sunday over the host Rizing Fukuoka.

"Things during the series were fine," he told me. "We got to end our four-game road trip on a good note. It was very important to us to win on the anniversary of the earthquake disaster, because we know how much our fans support us. It was more than a game, it was statement that Sendai is still strong and determined.

"It was a very emotional game. I dislocated my thumb in the first quarter which threw me off my game offensively, but coach still had faith in my defense and I was able to get some things done for my teammates on the defensive end. It was a great win not just for the 89ers, but for everyone that was affected by the disaster."

Insight from Coach Blackwell

As often as possible, I want to ask coaches about players and challenges that opposing teams give them.

So here's what Osaka Evessa sideline supervisor Ryan Blackwell had to say the other day about Sendai 89ers guard Takehiko "Take" Shimura and 89ers forward Johnny Dukes:

"Take is small, quick, and strong. He never seems to get tired, never stops moving and brings consistent energy to his team. The fact that he is so low to the ground makes it hard for most opponents to stop him. He's good at getting into the lane and making plays. He has a pretty decent shot from the perimeter which opens things up more for him. He is a great leader and teammate...even though I haven't played with him or coached him I can tell from his demeanor on the court. He's always staying positive no matter what the score is..he never gives up or stops playing hard.

"Johnny is a good athlete that plays inside and out. If his perimeter shot is falling, it makes them more tough because he's a pretty good finisher and good at getting in the lane and creating opportunities. He's a good rebounder with long arms and a capable defender because of his size and athleticism. He plays hard all the time which is something you always want from your players."

After Sunday's victory over the Ryukyu Golden Knigs, here's how Sendai 89ers coach Bob Pierce summed up the team's experience in Okinawa:

"One thing I really like about Okinawa, is that after we played our hearts out to get this win, there were lots of fans who gave Take (PG Takehiko Shimura, the captain), and I hope the rest of us, a nice round of applause."

Speaking to reporters on Saturday after his team's first home game in eight months, Sendai 89ers coach Bob Pierce said, "I just really want to thank the boosters and the fans, to see that many people out there cheering for us (proved) that after the earthquake we were able to put this team back together. We are very, very thankful to all the people in Sendai and the people that came from Akita to watch the game.

"It's nice to be playing basketball here in Sendai."
